Polish food supply safe despite Ukraine war, minister assures

Kowalczyk also warned that the war could lead to a visible rise in food prices.

Poland’s food supply is safe despite the Russia-Ukraine war because Poland, as part of Europe, produces more than it needs, the Polish agriculture minister said on Thursday.

Henryk Kowalczyk told an agricultural conference in Bialystok, north-eastern Poland, that the war posed a big challenge for Europe’s agriculture. He added that the conflict could also affect Ukraine’s farming sector and especially halt exports of Ukrainian wheat, which could bring famine to regions like North Africa or the Middle East.

Kowalczyk also warned that the war could lead to a visible rise in food prices.

“The war in Ukraine is a real challenge to European and Polish agriculture… We can feel safe in terms of food supply, because Europe, including Poland, produces much more food than it needs for its own consumption. However, one of the most tangible effects of the war will be rising prices,” Kowalczyk said.
