PGNiG, the Polish leading oil and gas company, has chartered three tankers to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the latest push to diversify supplies away from Russia.

Pawel Majewski, PGNiG’s CEO, told a press conference on Thursday that two of the three carriers will be available to the company in the H1 2022 and the third in the H2.

Each of the tankers will be able to carry 160,000 cubic feet of LNG, which will translate into 80-90 million cubic metres of natural gas after regasification.

Four other vessels that PGNiG plans to charter later on are now under construction, with the first two to be ready in 2023 and the other two in 2024, Majewski said.

Poland has been making intensive efforts to diminish its reliance on Russian gas by expanding its LNG terminal, signing contracts with LNG suppliers and investing in cross-border gas infrastructure.
