Polish PM to call on EU summit for recovery plan for Ukraine

According to Morawiecki, this recovery plan must be co-financed, above all, by the richest countries as they missed the moment when it had been possible to stop Russia's aggression.

Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, has said that it is necessary to prepare a recovery plan for Ukraine, and added that it should be co-financed by the richest European countries.

“I will be speaking about an all-European recovery plan for Ukraine during the forthcoming meeting of the European Council,” Morawiecki said in Lubiczow, near Warsaw on Saturday.

The meeting, planned to be focused on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, security, defence and energy issues as well as the coronavirus pandemic, will be held on March 24 and 25. It will be addressed by US President Joe Biden.

“Today’s Ukraine is being affected by fear, but is is also being marked by the courage of soldiers, who have been fighting, and by the hope of the entire nation for the rebirth of a sovereign state after the war,” Morawiecki went on to say.

“This hope must be based on a real foundation, namely, on a No. 2 Marshall Plan for Ukraine,” the prime minister said.

According to Morawiecki, this recovery plan must be co-financed, above all, by the richest countries as they missed the moment when it had been possible to stop Russia’s aggression.

Morawiecki said that, due to this reason, they should also be responsible for preparing this plan, and added that, today, Poland “has been bearing a considerable cost – which will be refinanced – of the largest refugee crisis since WWII.”

The recovery plan for Ukraine was one of the topics of a meeting of the Polish, Czech and Slovenian prime ministers in Kyiv on March 15.
