Russian envoys only pretend diplomacy, expert tells TVP World

Even today Russian diplomats are pretending they are doing diplomacy, they are pretending they want to negotiate and in fact, they are continuing their offensive into Ukraine, and what is more, diplomacy is only used to buy time for the Russian army, de facto there is no diplomacy,” professor Katarzyna Pisarska from the Casimir Pulaski foundation said in an interview with TVP World.

According to the professor until the war between Ukraine and Russia stops it will be extremely hard to undertake any diplomatic efforts. “Because both sides have a very clear vision of what means success, and there is no space for compromise in this vision,” the political scientist stressed.

She added that “for Vladimir Putin, success means complete obedience of Ukraine and its people to the Russian Federation, a puppet regime in Kyiv, and basically taking over Ukraine. And for Ukrainians who have already lost thousands of lives in the last 20 days, the only way to succeed is actually to get rid of the Russian soldiers and Vladimir Putin, and they are not willing to compromise in any way, because they have already paid the highest price.”

Volodymyr Zelenskiy a good partner for Europe

Professor Pisarska pointed out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is a good and reliable partner for other European countries. She said that he is a president who is “basically defending his capital, who has not only not capitulated but most importantly has stayed with his people, risking his life knowing that he is on the Russian ‘hit list’ from day one. It is not about him being credible for the outside world, he is a hero to his people and he really brings shame to a lot of the Western leaders.”

Ms Pisarska emphasised that the Ukrainian President in his speeches to the US Congress and the Bundestag made it very clear that he is fighting their war.

Russia is prepering the grounds for diplomacy by inflicting the maximum pain on Ukraine

In turn, she reminded that Russia is killing civilians by bombing hospitals, theatres and places where people try to find shelter, to try and inflict the maximum pain on the Ukrainian people in hope of a better negotiating position with Ukraine.

“He [Vladimir Putin] is not engaging as much in a direct military combat with Ukrainian army as he is engaging in bombing civilians in order to break the resolve, to break the conviction of the Ukrainian government and the Ukrainians that they have to continue their fight,” Katarzyna Pisarska stated.

She added that “Vladimir Putin is trying to prepare better grounds for him,” for better terms of compromise.

Russian society

At the end of the interview, the political scientist spoke about Russian society and how it views Russian aggression in Ukraine. She told about a recent poll done by a Ukrainian polling agency in Russia. The poll asked whether the war should be escalated, or even expanded into other countries if Russian interests necessitate this.

“75 percent of Russians said ‘yes, we should expand this operation, if needed, to Poland’ 64 percent said ‘to the Baltic States’ and 55 percent said ‘to the former Warsaw pact members such as the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia’,” Katarzyna Pisarska stressed.

She concluded her statement by saying that “It seems that the Russian society right now is in an upbeat of war (…) it shows the extent of the propaganda and the preparation of the Russian society for a long term world war, which actually is something that the Russians expected.”
