Polish student crowned Miss World

A 23-year-old student from Łódź, Karolina Bielawska, has become the 70th Miss World in a competition held in Puerto Rico.

“Karolina is also very passionate about the voluntary work that she is involved in,” the organisers said in a statement.

This is Poland’s first win in the contest since 1989, said the office of the Polish prime minister.

The contestant’s project “Zupa Na Pietrynie” provides “constant help to homeless people in crisis as well as raise awareness of this problem and fight against social exclusion.” According to the organisers, every Sunday “they provide hot meals, food packages, drinks, clothing, masks, legal advice and professional medical support for almost 300 people in need in Łódź.”

The competition featured 40 young women from around the world. The gala in Puerto Rico was supposed to take place last December, but a coronavirus thwarted the organisers. Miss World 2021 was eventually moved to March 16, 2022.

The first runner-up title went to United States, Shree Saini, second runner-up was Cote d’Ivoire, Olivia Yace.
