Airstrikes near Polish border prove that Putin expands his offensive: US official

On Sunday, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has stated that the Russian airstrike in the Lviv province near the Poland-Ukraine border proves that Putin is “expanding the number of targets” and that he is “frustrated” with the slow-paced Russian forces’ progress.

On Sunday morning, the Russian air force attacked the International Centre for Peacekeeping and Security – a military training ground in Yavoriv – located in the Lviv province, in the western part of Ukraine, near the Polish border. The local authorities have reported that 35 people have been killed and 134 have been wounded as a result of the attack.

Sullivan has stated that while there are no plans to have US troops operating in Ukraine, Washington will increase US assistance by providing Ukraine with anti-aircraft weapons and continuing to pressure Russia with sanctions.

He has also warned China against aiding Moscow and stressing that any efforts to provide help or get around the Western sanctions would result in severe consequences. “We will ensure that neither China nor anyone else can compensate Russia for these losses,” he added.

On Monday, Sullivan is to meet with the head diplomat of the Communist Party of China Yang Jiechi in Rome, in order to keep the communication channels between Washington and Beijing open. The diplomats will also discuss the effects of the war in Ukraine on both global and local security.

While in Rome, Sullivan will also meet with Luigi Mattiolo, the diplomatic advisor to the Italian Prime Minister, to discuss the coordinated response of the West to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
