China opposes sanctions against Russia

The Chinese Foreign Ministry opposes the imposition of sanctions on Russia. China, which wants to be recognised as a country taking a neutral stance towards Russian aggression in Ukraine, has once again called for calm and to defuse tensions through dialogue.

Why does China oppose the sanctions?

A spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying, when asked whether China would join Western sanctions against Russia, replied that “sanctions are not the best way to solve problems”.

As expected by experts on dealing with China, the government in Beijing is unlikely to support any restrictions on Russia.

The authorities in Beijing in their statements suggest that China is a neutral state towards the conflict. The Chinese position is, however, according to experts, a form of support for the
Kremlin.

On the opening day of the Winter Olympics in Beijing there was a meeting between the presidents of Russia and China, during which China fully supported Moscow’s demands not to expand NATO and for the West to provide Russia with so-called security guarantees.

Sanctions already imposed

However, on Tuesday countries including Canada, the US, EU member states and even Japan imposed new sanctions on Russian banks and elites after Moscow ordered troops into separatist regions of eastern Ukraine.

These sanctions consist of a ban on all financial relations with the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, which Russia has recognised as independent states. They also apply to the MPs who have supported the decisions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as state-owned or state-supported banks.
