Migration crisis: 15 people force PL-BY border

“Yesterday, i.e. on 9 February, 15 foreigners – seven Pakistani nationals, five Yemeni nationals and three nationals from Guinea – tried to enter the territory of Poland illegally,” the Border Guard wrote on Twitter.

“The individuals flew in from Russia in January and February this year. There were 106 attempts to enter Poland illegally from Belarus this month, and 1146 since the beginning of the year,” the Border Guard added.

The illegal crossings

Moreover, a group of illegal migrants approached the border several times with a ladder in the region of Czeremcha. They probably planned to throw it over the concertina, but upon seeing our patrols they withdrew,” Border Guard spokeswoman Lieutenant Anna Michalska told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

Furthermore, this morning officers from the Border Guard post in Czeremcha noticed that the emblem of Belarus was missing from one of the border posts on the Belarusian side. Earlier, Lieutenant Michalska reported that Belarusian soldiers had unscrewed the screws from the plates fixing the emblem of Belarus on the border posts.

“We do not know whether this is a planned action or the next stage of the scenario of the Belarusian services, and maybe in a moment they will accuse us of this, especially since they have already accused us of destroying the signs, so perhaps this is another such provocation,” the spokeswoman assesed.

Migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border

Since the beginning of the year, Border Guard officers have recorded 1,146 attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian.

Last year, the Border Guard recorded 39,700 attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border. In December, there were over 1,700 attempts, 8,900 in November, 17,500 in October, 7,700 in September, and 3,500 in August.

A ban on stay in the strip encompassing 183 localities in the Podlaskie and Lubelskie provinces in the border zone with Belarus was introduced for three months, from December 1 to March 1. The inhabitants and emergency services are excluded from this ban. Previously, a state of emergency was in force in the same area.

At the end of January, the construction of a border barrier between Poland and Belarus began. The 5.5-metre-high barrier will stretch over 186 kilometres and will cost approximately EUR 260 mln. The barrier is due to be operational by June.
