A group of girls at a juvenile detention centre have become an unexpected internet sensation after appearing in a calendar dressed as celebrities.

In an attempt to dispel stereotypes that women in correction facilities are ‘ugly and degenerate’ the nine girls from the Juvenile Detention Centre in Zawiercie in southern Poland posed in a stunning pastiche of stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe.

Using the detention centre as a set, Bieńkowska and the girls met photographer Dagmara Krzywicka from the Jurassic Photo Team where they spent all day on the session, faithfully reproducing imitations of old photos.Dagmara Krzywicka/Fundacja “Żyć na nowo”

Katarzyna Bieńkowska, a teacher at the facility who came up with the idea said: “The idea to create a calendar appeared quite spontaneously.

“I had thought about organising a photo session for the girls much earlier, when implementing one of my artistic projects.

The centre’s Katarzyna Bieńkowska said: “These girls are often perceived by society as ugly, degenerate. I hope all will discover from the calendar that they are beautiful, young women, often very talented and valuable.Dagmara Krzywicka/Fundacja “Żyć na nowo”

“I shared the idea with my friend, Dagmara, who works with photography. She liked the idea and proposed a session and a calendar for 2022.

“My task was to choose original photos of the stars. I also chose styling for them, advised on make-up that was typical for a given historical era.”

Entitled ‘Through hardship to the stars’ the calendar was shot at the Juvenile Detention Centre in Zawiercie in southern Poland.Dagmara Krzywicka/Fundacja “Żyć na nowo”

Published last week, the calendar has now gone viral with fans praising both the amateur models and the photography.

Each photo includes an inspirational quote from the celebrity being portrayed, as with this quote from Brigitte Bardot saying: ‘You may call me a sinner, but I live at peace with myself.’Dagmara Krzywicka/Fundacja “Żyć na nowo”

“Unfortunately, their fate probably turned out differently than they would have liked, but our facility and employees care about their development and discovering talents that they might not have learned about.”

Director of the facility Robert Kleszcz said: “Thanks to the project, the girls can show that many stereotypes about them and correctional institutions are completely untrue.”Dagmara Krzywicka/Fundacja “Żyć na nowo”

Profits from the sale of the calendars will go to the Foundation ‘Live Again,’ which operates at the Juvenile Detention Center and the Youth Shelter in Zawiercie to help offenders back in to society.
