16 illegal attempts to cross PL-BY border

In the last 24 hours, the Border Guard (SG) recorded 16 people trying to cross the Polish-Belarusian border illegally. In the section near Szudziałów, two people in civilian clothes threw stones and branches at Polish patrols.

A spokeswoman for the Border Guard, Lieutenant Anna Michalska, said that on Sunday, about 1:30 pm CEST, four people on the Belarusian side tried to get to the territory of Poland. Meanwhile, two people in civilian clothes – wearing caps with markings that resembled those of Belarusian services – cut the concertina wire with scissors. Then they started throwing stones and branches at the Polish patrols.

The four men were arrested shortly after and then taken to the border line. “None of them applied for international protection. They did not declare that they needed medical assistance,” said Lt. Michalska.

Later, on the same section protected by the Border Guard post in Szudziałów, at 3:50am, Polish patrols noticed Belarusian soldiers who cut the wire.

“On the other side, about 10 foreigners were hidden in the bushes, but at the sight of Polish patrols, all of them withdrew and no one attempted to cross the border,” the spokeswoman said.

She also reported that a car in which a Syrian was carrying five illegal migrants, citizens of Iraq, was stopped in the area of the Border Guard post in Płaska.

In 2021, the Border Guard recorded over 40,000 attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border. Since the beginning of 2022, a total of 44 individuals have tried to enter Polish territory without permission.

A ban on stay in the strip encompassing 183 localities in the Podlaskie and Lubelskie provinces in the border zone with Belarus was introduced for three months, from December 1 to March 1. The inhabitants and emergency services are excluded from this ban. Previously, a state of emergency was in force in the same area.
