Prime minister wishes Polish families hope for better future

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in his Christmas message to Polish families that this special joyful occasion should give them hope for the future.

“This is what I would like to wish to all Polish families, so that the joy of the Newborn would give us more confidence, perspective, and hope for the future,” he said addressing a meeting with families at the Ministry of Family and Social Policy on Thursday.

At the same time he pointed to the Law and Justice (PiS) government’s efforts to improve the lives of Poles, including new child benefits to be offered next year.

Morawiecki announced that under the “Family Welfare Capital” scheme approved by the cabinet in mid-August, the state will from the start of 2022 pay families PLN 12,000 (EUR 2,590) for each child after their firstborn between the age of 12 and 36 months. The benefit will be available to all families, regardless of income.

The government estimates that 615,000 children will be eligible for the benefit.

Marlena Maląg, the family minister, present at the meeting, pointed to a number of “pro-family” policies implemented by the PiS government since 2015, most notably its flagship “500 Plus” child benefit, which will continue alongside the new programme.

Maląg said that all the government’s social programmes are “tailored to the needs of families” and that the goal was to change the demographic and financial situation of Polish families.

“We are building a state of happy families, 95 percent of young Poles want to start a family, want to have children, so our PiS government, the United Right, wants to make this reality a fact,” Maląg claimed.

But 500 Plus, though popular, has so far failed in its aim of boosting Poland’s low birth rate. According to the Central Statistical Office, the Polish population fell by approximately 115,000 in 2020.
