Poland’s first nuclear power plant to be erect on Baltic Sea coast

The Lubiatowo-Kopalino location in the Pomorskie province in northern Poland is the preferred site for building the first nuclear power plant in the country, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ), the investor, announced on Wednesday.

“The location has been selected on the basis of a detailed environmental study that has been conducted since 2017. It meets all the environmental requirements for such facilities and is safe for local residents,” said PEJ, the state-owned company responsible for the investment.

At the beginning of the site selection process, as many as 92 potential locations were embraced by the series of analyses to determine the perfect place to build the plant. They examined factors such as land properties, cooling water availability, location in relation to areas covered by forms of nature protection, including Natura 2000 sites, and existing and expandable infrastructure elements, such as energy, road and rail networks.

One of the seaside locations under consideration by PEJ was Żarnowiec, where the then-communist authorities started the construction of a nuclear power plant in 1982. It was closed down in 1989.

The Polish Energy Policy until 2040 foresees that in 2033, the first block of the Polish nuclear power plant with a capacity of approximately 1-1.6 GW will be put into operation. The next blocks are to be launched every two or three years, and the entire nuclear programme envisages the construction of six units with a joint capacity of up to 9 GW.

The overall cost of the programme is estimated at around PLN 140 bn (EUR 30.2 bn).
