COVID-19: First cases of Omicron strain detected in Croatia

The first two cases of infection with the new variant of the Omicron coronavirus strain have been detected in Croatia, Krunoslav Capak, director of the Institute of Public Health, announced on Monday.

“We do not know yet how these people became infected with the new variant of the coronavirus because they did not travel outside Croatia recently. We suspect that the infection occurred at a business meeting, also attended by foreigners. All participants were called to conduct tests and are currently under quarantine,” said the epidemiologist Bernard Kaić from the Institute of Public Health.

According to the Croatian daily Dnevik, the infected do not show strong symptoms of the disease.

So far, around 52 percent of the Croatian population have been fully vaccinated.
