Football: Matty Cash receives Polish citizenship

Matthew “Matty” Cash, the England-born player of the Premier League side Aston Villa, received Polish citizenship on Tuesday. The right-back is likely to make his debut for the national team in November.

Cash is eligible to play for Poland due to his mother, who is half-Polish. Her parents emigrated to the UK after WWII. The footballer submitted all the necessary documentation at the beginning of October.

“It is an important day for me and my family. My application for Polish citizenship has been approved by the Polish authorities. I thank Mr President, my family and others who helped me. Time for new challenges, I will do my best for this country!,” Cash tweeted on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Cezary Kulesza, the Polish Football Association chairman announced that the Masovian Provincial head had completed all the formalities and signed the act of recognition of Polish citizenship for Matty Cash. Earlier in October, Mr Kulesza met with President Andrzej Duda. Since then, the matter has accelerated considerably.

Earlier in October, the player and his family attended a meeting for young Polish footballers at the Embassy in London. In an interview with website, he stated that he had already started learning the Polish national anthem so as to be able to sing it comfortably just before his first start for the national team.

Due to his maternal ancestry, Cash has been familiar with several aspects of Polish culture, especially the cuisine. He is also aware of the country’s “beautiful and tragic” history.

Paulo Sousa, Poland’s coach, was among those who assisted in the acceleration of all the formal procedures. He acknowledges the player’s value and his potential value for the team, and even went to England to watch him play prior to him receiving a Polish passport.

Matty Cash is a starter for Aston Villa, currently 13th in the Premier League table. The future Polish representative has played in all his team’s matches and registered one goal against Everton. His contract with Aston Villa runs until June 30, 2025. The prestigious portal estimates his value at EUR 22 mln, which makes him the fourth highest-priced Polish player.
