Despicable provocation: Belarussian opposition leader on border crisis

“This is a despicable provocation by Lukashenka,” Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, leader of the Belarusian opposition, assessed, commenting on the situation with migrants on the Polish-Belarusian border. “Everything must be done for [Alyaksandr] Lukashenka to be affected by sanctions and any cooperation with state-owned companies must be blocked,” she appealed.

In an interview with the Polish tabloid daily “Fakt,” Ms Tsikhanouskaya was asked about a group of migrants from the Middle East camping near the Polish border in Belarus and being pushed out by Belarusian border guards.

“We are closely following what is happening there. I believe that this is an attempt to destabilise the neighbouring countries for their firm and consistent stance in defending democratic values and for helping the Belarusian people. This is a despicable provocation from Lukashenka,” she stressed.

“Of course, we feel sorry for the people who camp there on the border. However, they are also responsible for it. Why did they take part in the procedure organised by the Belarusian regime? The people who organised this action were probably handsomely paid by Lukashenka. Therefore, it is his competence, and not Poland or Lithuania, to resolve this situation,” she continued.

She emphasised that the Belarusian president “plays with refugees” in order to achieve his goals.

“He wants Europe to start talking to him again. Then he will negotiate. But then he will start “playing with political prisoners” and the life and future of the Belarusian people. As he has done before,” Ms Tsikhanouskaya assessed.

“Therefore, under no circumstances should Europe allow this to happen. Only the release of all political prisoners and the commencement of negotiations to give up power is the sole goal of the Belarusian people. One has to stop escalating violence and hold genuinely free elections,” she stressed.

She remarked that Poland greatly supported the activities for a democratic Belarus and expressed her gratitude for it.

“However, it is not only Poland and Lithuania, but also other European countries that must adopt a clear position – no cooperation with the Belarusian regime. Everything must be done for Lukashenka to be hit by sanctions and any cooperation with state-owned companies should be blocked,” Ms Tsikhanouskaya appealed.
