Polish goods to be removed from supermarkets in Minsk

Minsk authorities have demanded retail chains remove goods placed on their “best shelves” in their supermarkets, from countries that have placed sanctions on the Belarusian government, including Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine. The announcement was made by Vladimir Kukharev, the mayor of Minsk, the capital of Belarus.

“What’s going on? Various countries have placed sanctions on us. Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, and their goods (sweets, tea, cookies, pastries) are on the best shelves in stores, meanwhile we have to look for domestic goods,” the mayor said on Saturday, announcing that the authorities held talks with the representatives of supermarkets.

“We made it brutally clear, either the situation changes or we take action. At the same time, in my opinion, such a decision should be made nationwide,” the chairman of the city authorities said.

The Belarusian elections in August 2020, in which Alexander Lukashenko allegedly got over 80 percent of the national vote and the opposition’s candidate Svyatlana Tschikhanouskaya only 10 percent, evoked countrywide protests, to which police responded with brutality and mass arrests.

In response to the actions of the government in Minsk, including hijacking a plane to arrest a Belarusian journalist critical of the government, many countries imposed sanctions on high ranking Belarusian officials.
