Number of farms in decline, but growing in size: report

Although the number of farms in Poland is decreasing, they are getting bigger and more technologically advanced, according to the preliminary results of the agricultural census that took place last year.

The conclusions were presented by the Statistics Poland (GUS), although they will be supplemented in the coming months.

Over the last 10 years, the mechanisation of agriculture has progressed, as there are more tractors and harvesters in the countryside. This is a result of various support programmes launched after joining the European Union.

Comparing the data from the previous census of 2010, the number of farms has dropped by 13 percent in ten years, but they are larger – currently, an average farm is around 11 hectares (27 acres). The sown area has increased, but there are fewer orchards.

The area of grain and potato crops decreased, while rapeseed and vegetables are now more common than in 2010. The cattle population increased, as opposed to porcine.

“The image of the Polish countryside is important, knowing it allows you to make strategic decisions,” pointed out experts who expect further changes. There will probably be fewer farmers, while the farms themselves will continue to expand. The segment of non-agricultural services connected to the countryside will also increase.

The agricultural census took place in September-November 2020. On April 1, another census – the National Census of Population and Housing – was launched.
