On Wednesday, the Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau raised the topic during the meeting of NATO foreign ministers. The head of Polish diplomacy reported that the detention of the leader of the Union of Poles in Belarus was discussed with the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell and the OSCE chairwoman Ann Linde.

In response to the arrest, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed opposition to the detention of Andżelika Borys and called for her release as soon as possible. The ministry called the recent activities of the Belarusian authorities “arbitrary persecution of representatives of the Polish minority.” The Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Poland were also summoned to the Polish Ministry of Diplomacy.

Ms Borys, the leader of the Union of Poles in Belarus, was detained on Tuesday in Grodno. One day later, it was announced that she had been sentenced to 15 days in custody.

The reason for the detention was the celebration of St. Casimir’s Day (March 4) which was organised by the association without permission from the authorities.
