The percentage of Poles who know how to use their phones to pay for something is above the global average, a recent report by Mastercard has shown.

According to the Mastercard study “State of Pay 2020”, the awareness of paying by phone in Poland is at the level of 84 percent, far above the global average of 65 percent.

The report said that since the outbreak of the pandemic, 60 percent of Polish consumers now choose contactless means of payment, both by card and by phone.

The study also found that 34 percent of those surveyed use contactless payments as often as they did before the pandemic while only 4 percent of them use them less often.

“During the pandemic, Polish consumers are more likely to pay without cash, especially by contactless payments, which are already possible in all terminals in our country,” said Bartosz Ciolkowski, CEO for Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia at Mastercard Europe.

He added that Poles intend to carry on paying this way once the pandemic ends as contactless payments are perceived by them as convenient, safe and more hygienic.

The study also noted that the most popular mobile payment systems in Poland are Apple Pay and GPay, respectively, for owners of iOS and Android phones.

Around 70 percent of debit card transactions are purchases of up to PLN 100 (EUR 21), which do not need to be confirmed with a PIN, Mastercard said.
