Population of European bison increases in Poland

The counting of the European bison population in Poland has come to an end. According to the Białowieża National Park, north-east Poland, the publisher and maintainer of the European Bison Pedigree Book, there were a total of 2,316 specimens of this kind in Poland at the end of 2020 – nearly 50 more than in 2019.

A total of 201 European bisons live in breeding centers, zoos and other facilities, including 77 males and 124 females.

In turn, 2,115 specimens live in the wild in six large populations: 707 in the Bieszczady region, 17 in the Augustowska Forest, 715 in the Białowieska Forest, 128 in the Borecka Forest, 214 in the Knyszyńska Forest and 334 in herds inhabiting western Poland.

Every year, the number of European bison living in the wild is growing year by year, whereas those kept in closed enclosures is decreasing. In 2021, two new free herds will appear: in the Janowskie Forests and in the Romincka Forest.
