Germany should be subject to sanctions because of NS2: UK MP

NATO countries should impose sanctions on Germany in connection with the construction of Nord Stream 2, and the best way to stop the gas pipeline under construction is to raise environmental issues, British MP of Polish origin Daniel Kawczynski, of the Conservative Party, told PAP (Polish Press Agency).

Last week, at the initiative of Mr Kawczynski, the British House of Commons debated Nord Stream 2, during which he presented a number of arguments explaining why the UK should be more involved in stopping the gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.

“NATO membership means privileges but also responsibilities. Its members have a duty not only to defend others in the event of an armed attack by Russia, but also to prevent them from being pressured or blackmailed by Russia,” Mr Kawczynski said.

He pointed out that one of the NATO members, Germany, is not fulfilling these obligations as it engages in an investment that weakens the security of others.

“I think there should be some form of a formal reprimand for Germany by NATO in connection with Nord Stream 2,” the British MP said. He emphasised that it is not unusual for an organisation to reprimand or even impose sanctions on its own member and recalls how many times the EU has taken action against Poland.

Mr Kawczynski argued that NATO members from Central-Eastern Europe deserve to be defended against pressure from Russia, because they fulfill their obligations resulting from membership and take very specific steps themselves to reduce energy dependence on Moscow and increase security.

At the same time, he regretted the fact that so little was said about the project among the political establishment in Britain or in the British media, which, in his opinion, the UK should wholeheartedly support, both for security reasons and the potential economic benefits resulting from cooperation with CEE countries.

In the opinion of MP Kawczynski, the best way to stop Nord Stream 2 now is to raise the issue of the environmental risks especially considering the UK will host the UN climate summit COP26 this year. “Let’s look at the potential for environmental threats or if the gas pipeline is accidentally damaged during war or if the Russians damage it intentionally,” the MP said.

He argues that the UK, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has a duty, together with the US, to do everything possible so that this project does not happen. Especially since Brexit, the UK is no longer bound by EU membership restrictions, it can pursue an independent foreign policy.

During the recent debate in the House of Commons, Deputy Foreign Minister Wendy Morton stated that the UK considers Nord Stream 2 a threat to Europe’s energy security and will continue to raise her objections to this project. However, she pointed out that although NS2 is very controversial, the UK must recognise Germany’s sovereign right to shape its own energy policy.
