Polish reporter ‘beaten and severely injured’ by security forces in Myanmar

A Polish journalist has been seized and beaten by security forces in Myanmar.

Robert Bociaga who works for the DPA German Press Agency was arrested by soldiers on Thursday in Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State, according to reports.

A journalist from Khit Thit Media said that the 30-year-old had been beaten and ‘seriously’ injured.

The Polish Foreign Ministry has now confirmed the arrest of a Polish journalist, as well as the Polish consul in Thailand and the German consul in Myanmar.

Following a coup at the beginning of February, security forces have been cracking down not only against demonstrators but also journalists. 

Many local reporters have already been arrested, and a few days ago the new military junta revoked the licenses of several large media companies.

Thursday saw at least 12 people killed by the ruling junta. 

Bociaga’s current whereabouts and condition are unknown. 

Poland’s Foreign Ministry said that “every effort was being made to contact the detainee in order to help him and to obtain information about his state of health and his legal situation.”
