Almost 1.5 million out of 38 million Poles have been vaccinated with the second dose of the anti-Covid-19 vaccines, according to government data.

Poland reported a 2021 record high number of 21,045 new Covid-19 daily cases on Thursday with the total number of infections in the country reaching 1,849,424.

The country’s central Mazowieckie province, which includes the capital city of Warsaw, and the western province of Lubuskie have come under tough new lockdown restrictions after infections in these regions spiked.

The new restrictions will be in force from March 15 to 28, with hotels, cultural institutions and sports facilities shut down, while the operation of shopping centres will also be limited.

Earlier, Polish authorities introduced a stricter coronavirus regime in the popular lakeside province of Warminsko-Mazurskie and the seaside Pomorskie area.

The pandemic will likely reach its peak at the end of April, Andrzej Horban, the prime minister’s chief Covid-19 advisor, said on Friday.
