Pole from Brest detained over Indomitable Soldiers Day event

A 43-year-old inhabitant of Brest, Belarus, an activist of the Polish minority, was detained by Belarusian authorities in connection with the organisation of an unofficial event devoted to the day of the Polish Indomitable Soldiers by a local Polish community.

The Belarusian government news agency “Belta” reported that the prosecutor of Brest initiated a criminal case in connection with the event that took place on February 28. A group of people took – as it was described – “deliberate actions aimed at rehabilitation of Nazism and incitement to ethnic hatred.”

One of the co-founders of the Polish School organisation was arrested on suspicion of committing a crime. Belarusian investigators searched the detainee’s office and apartment. Posters and literature on the activities of the Indomitable Soldiers, including arguably the most controversial item, Romuald Rajs nom de guerre “Bury,” were seized.

In Belarus, the activity of the Indomitable Soldiers is perceived ambiguously. It is mainly related to the activity of ”Bury”, whom Belarusian authorities accuse of pacifying several villages near Białystok, north-eastern Poland, inhabited by the Belarusian population after 1945.
