On March 2nd, the 95 year old had been returning from the shops when two strangers followed her into her home and presented themselves as a water manager and a member of administrative staff.

They told Weronika that a pipe in her building had burst and told her to pour water into her bathtub so that she could make a cup of tea while it is being repaired.

According to the police website, the crooks told Weronika to pour water into her bathtub so that she could make a cup of tea and then they disappeared with her money and jewellery.Policja

She did as she was told, keeping an eye on the bathtub as instructed. Fifteen minutes later, the duo left her flat with her life savings for a flat renovation and much needed eye operation.

Moved by her story, police woman Ziobro who works at a police department in Warsaw for combating economic crime, decided to help her by launching a crowdfunding initiative on the zrzutka.pl platform with the title “She lost her savings because she trusted people”.

Ziobro wrote: “Nothing, nothing, will compensate for the theft of the sentimental jewellery, but the amount that will allow Weronika to sleep peacefully in any way is not big, and together with the smallest contribution from people of good will, it may allow Weronika to smile again.”

She was hoping to raise 13,000 złoty for Weronika, roughly the value of the savings and items that were stolen.

Hpoing to raise 13,000 złoty, the website has now been flooded with kind-hearted members of the public who have so far helped to raise over 140,000 złoty.zrzutka.pl

The response has been huge: people have already donated over 140,000 złoty (over 30,000 euros) for Weronika, more than ten times the amount that Ziobro had been hoping to raise.

Over 4,800 Internet users contributed, with people wishing Weronika good health and praising Ziobro for her initiative in the comments on the crowdfunding page.
