A mechanical engineering PhD student has created a system to help protect golf players from injuries and to help correct their technique.

Keen golfer Justyna Bącela came up with the idea for her Weregolf smart haptic suit after coaching others to play the game.

She told TFN: “Weregolf is a smart suit that allows you to exercise your muscle memory, increase the efficiency of your training sessions and eliminate bad movement habits.

“Our device is based on a motion capture technology, which ensures identification of even most complex movements.

“It is paired with a data analysis software, which, in real time, verifies, whether the movement is performed correctly.

“In case of irregularities or errors, the so-called haptic, vibrotactile  feedback is sent to the relevant body part, aimed at correcting the movement sequence of which deviated from the perfect one.

Bącela is an avid golfer who also has worked as a coach, which inspired her to create a system that would measure precisely a players swing.Press materials

“It is worth emphasizing that all these stages take place while the movement is being performed, which is extremely important for training correct muscle memory and eliminating bad habits.”

The technology won’t just help prevent injuries for golfers though, as it can be applied to any sport that uses repetitive actions as well as rehabilitation and physical therapy.

The team, which includes Piotr Ciochoń, who has a PhD degree in physics  and serves as the company’s CTO, and Wojciech Zdunkiewicz, the CFO, expect to launch their service later this year.Press materials

Bącela said: “Weregolf is dedicated to athletes, primarily golfers but we plan on introducing our smart suit to other disciplines where the emphasis is put on muscle memory training, e.g. tennis, basketball, and also into broadly understood rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

The suit used the same motion capture technology as that used in films for special effects as well as video games in which characters move. Press materials

“It also helps to improve the coaching process because verbal or visual feedback from the coach is not fully sufficient for the athlete to make corrections in his movement right away.

“Haptic feedback will certainly make both the coach’s and the athlete’s job easier when it comes to learning the correct movement.”

Utilising the technology to prevent injury and teach correct technique is an innovation that won the start-up the third edition of the PFR School of Pioneers.Press materials
