8 pct of UE adult population vaccinated: EC head

“So far, more than 29 million people in the EU have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” the European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen announced on Thursday, adding that the figure represents approximately 8 percent of the EU adult population.

“To date, more than 29 million people have received the vaccine. This is 6.4 percent of the EU population. If we exclude adolescents and children, it will be around 8 percent of the adult population,” announced Ursula von der Leyen at a joint conference with the Head of the European Council Charles Michel.

“Fatigue is growing among our citizens. It has been a very difficult year. But we should not let go now. The situation in some parts of Europe remains serious and we must also be careful about new variants [of coronavirus]”, Ms von der Leyen appealed, adding that in 20 EU countries the number of infections is currently declining while in 7 it is increasing.

The Head of the European Commission also called for haste in implementing vaccination certificates.

“There are still a number of open political questions regarding vaccination certificates. The decision on what you can do if you have such a certificate will be primarily made in individual countries. I believe that at the EU level we should use them to ensure the functioning of the common market”, emphasised the EC head, adding that the implementation of the vaccination certification system will take approximately three months. “We have to hurry if we want to make it by the summer,” she stressed.

3,163,856 vaccinations against COVID-19 disease have been conducted in Poland so far, including over 1.1 mln with two doses.
