Warsaw is becoming a city of cars – daily

Warsaw has become a car city, with more registered vehicles in the capital than residents, according to a city councillor quoted by the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper.

The paper reported that at the end of last year there were 1,935,000 vehicles registered in Warsaw, including nearly 1.5 million passenger cars and 4,269 electric ones, while there were only 1.8 million people in the city.

“Warsaw is a city of cars, with more vehicles than residents,” said Marek Szolc, the head of the environment protection committee of the Warsaw city council.

The increase in the number of cars has also been stimulated by a growing number of vehicles which are either owned or leased by companies.

A spokesman of the Motor Transport Institute told Wyborcza: “Warsaw has a very high number of passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants. It has been on the rise and is already higher than many West European cities with more residents.”

The number of vehicle registrations dropped last year, however.

Quoting Warsaw Town Hall’s data, the newspaper reported that “in 2020, a total of 281,522 vehicles were registered in Warsaw. In 2019 the figure was 342,913.”

Experts attribute the drop to the Covid-19 pandemic.
