Poland purchases 20 million AstraZeneca vaccines

Poland has purchased 20 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, including 4 million doses for resale to countries outside the EU, a deputy health minister Maciej Miłkowski said on Thursday.

Out of that number, 16 million are to be included in the register of the National Vaccine Programme, while 4 million are to be resold to Eastern Partnership and Western Balkans countries, such as Ukraine, Georgia and Albania.

The deputy minister added that talks regarding the official consent of the EU for the resale are in progress. He noted that according to initial declarations made by AstraZeneca, the deliveries of all doses should be completed in the first half of the year.

Mr Miłkowski also announced that Johnson & Johnson vaccines should arrive in Poland in April. They would be the first one-dose vaccines, whereas the others require a second injection.

Poland has contracted to obtain nearly 100 million doses of vaccines, including: 20 million from AstraZeneca (16 million doses plus 4 million for resale); 41 million from Pfizer/BioNTech; almost 17 million from Johnson & Johnson; 6.7 million from Moderna; and nearly 5.7 million from CureVac.
