Civic Platform, Poland’s main opposition party, has proposed the liberalisation of the abortion laws as part of a new project focusing on women’s rights.

Recent changes to the abortion law in Poland, which have resulted in an almost complete ban on the practice, have helped thrust the issue of women’s reproductive rights into the political spotlight.

In Civic Platform’s (PO) “Women’s Rights Package” abortion will be allowed to up to the 12th week of pregnancy following consultations with a doctor and psychologist. It also pledges to ensure free access to contraception–including emergency contraception–in-vitro procedures and prenatal tests, as well as support for families raising children with disabilities.

Borys Budka, the party’s leader, said the state should pay special attention to the care of Polish women.

“We believe that a woman must feel safe” he said. “The state should guarantee comprehensive care so that a woman can consciously and safely make decisions about her future, including motherhood.”

Agnieszka Pomaska, a PO MP, said that the “Women’s Rights Package” should give women a sense of security “at every stage of life”.
