Polish unemployment down to 5.4% in May: stats office

Unemployment in Poland dropped to 5.4 percent in May, from 5.6 percent in April, the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS) said on Wednesday.

The reading was in line with an earlier estimate by the country’s labour minister.

There were around 906,000 people without jobs at the end of May, down from 938,300 a month earlier, according to the Central Statistical Office.

Labour and Social Policy Minister Bożena Borys-Szopa told reporters earlier this month that the 5.4 percent jobless figure for May marked the lowest monthly unemployment rate in the country since September 1990.

Poland’s unemployment rate is expected to fall to 5.1 percent at the end of 2020 under a set of budget targets adopted by the country’s government this month.
