Polish energy giant seeking wind farm partner: report

Poland’s largest energy company, PGE, is looking for a business partner experienced in developing offshore wind farms to join a new project to be sited in the Baltic Sea, according to a report.

The new offshore wind farm would have a total capacity of 2,545 MW and supply up to 4 million households with electricity, the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily reported.

PGE’s list of potential partners is confidential, according to the daily.

The project and connecting the new facility to Poland’s power grid may cost around PLN 30 billion (EUR 6.99 bn, USD 7.93 bn) in total, the paper said.

The undertaking would be one of the largest in the history of Poland’s energy sector.

A coal-fired unit with a power generating capacity of 1,000 MW costs from PLN 5.5 billion to PLN 6 billion, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna reported. Wind farms are more expensive to build but cheaper to operate as they do not require millions of tonnes of coal nor do they emit CO2.

The new Polish wind farm turbines are expected to be launched around 2025, the paper said.

The investment project is in line with Poland’s energy policy to 2040. So far, nearly 80 percent of the country’s power comes from coal.
