Polish president signs laws to fight tax evasion

tax evasion

Polish President Andrzej Duda has signed into law a so-called fuel legislative package, a set of measures designed to clamp down on tax evasion.

Under the legislation, which includes amendments to several laws, each importer of fuel, gas or oil from another EU member state will have to pay VAT within five days of the product arriving in Poland.

The package is part of a crackdown on tax evaders prepared by the Polish Ministry of Finance.

The ministry estimates that the measures will top up public coffers to the tune of up to PLN 2.5 bn (EUR 570 million).

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro has announced that tougher penalties for tax fraud are to be introduced.

Those fraudulently filing tax returns will face 25 years in prison if the sum involved exceeds PLN 5 million (EUR 1.14 million).
