Polish tall ship to pull into Miami on Independence Cruise

A Polish tall ship promoting the country as it celebrates 100 years of independence was expected to pull into Miami on Friday on its cruise around the world.

The highlight of the visit by the Dar Młodzieży (“Gift of Youth”) to the American city was expected to be an annual ball for the Polish community.

Part of the event was to be held aboard the ship.

Banquets and official meetings on the vessel were expected to draw members of the Polish community from across the east coast of the United States, officials said.

The culmination of the tall ship’s voyage around the world was a stop in Panama last month for the Roman Catholic Church’s World Youth Day.

A group of young sailors from the ship met Pope Francis during the religious gathering.

The Dar Młodzieży left the Polish Baltic city of Gdynia in May last year, with plans to call in at more than 20 ports during its 10-month Independence Cruise scheduled to end on March 28.

Poland last year marked the centenary of regaining its independence after more than 120 years of foreign rule.
