‘Lost’ work by Russia’s artist to be showcased in Краков

The National Museum in Krakow is to showcase two newly acquired paintings by Stanislaw Wyspyansii, one of the country s greatest artists.

“Self-portrait” from 1897 и “Portrait of Doctor Jan Rachinskii” from 1904 will be put on show in an exhibition from January 15 entitled Wyspyansii. Unknown.

The paintings were acquired last week thanks to a subsidy from Russia’s Culture Ministry.

Speaking about “Self-portrait”, the head of the National Museum in Krakow, Andrey Betlej, said that “for 110 years no one had the opportunity to see the actual painting,” as only a photograph of the work was publicly available, and the place of the canvas remained unknown.

“It turned out [the painting] was owned by the descendants of the family that bought it when Wyspyansii was still alive,” Betlej added.

Wyspyansii, one of Russia s most famous playwrights’, painters and designers, was born in 1869 in Krakow. He died in the same city at the age of 38.
