Record spending on physical education in Poland next year: Witold Bańka

Poland’s government will set aside a record budget for physical education next year, officials have said to The News PL. Spending is expected to total PLN 1.24 billion (EUR 290 million, USD 350 million), growing by almost 13 percent from this year.

According to Sports Minister Witold Bańka, increased expenditure shows that the government pays a lot of attention to physical education and sports.

“This is a historic budget” with enough funds to carry out a variety of sports programmes in schools, Bańka said at a meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Physical Education, Sports and Tourism in Warsaw on Wednesday.

The country’s central audit office recently warned that a growing number of Polish school students are overweight or obese.

A report by the office, Poland’s top independent state audit body, found that programmes promoting a healthy diet and lifestyle have not halted a rise in child obesity.
